Similar to other common Container Engines (Docker, CRI-O, containerd), Podman relies on an OCI compliant Container Runtime (runc, crun, runv, etc) to interface with the operating system and create the running containers. WebContainer Runtime Interface (CRI)—this is the API used by Kubernetes to control container runtimes. The CRI API describes how Kubernetes should interact with a container runtime. So while containerd is a specific container runtime, CRI is an interface that can work with any supported runtime.
